Guest blogger Nina Funnell - 'Sexting' and amateur porn

'Sexting' Youtube clip

To date, very little theoretical or cultural space has been afforded which might allow us to think of young people as the producers, rather than the victims, or damaged consumers of sexually explicit material. But with the growing trend of 'sexting', it is apparent that young people are acting as the producers of amateur porn.

At present, the current infancy of the theoretical position that approaches the child as a competent sexual agent, and the lack of discourse around such agency, means that both linguistically and intellectually we are limited to, and constrained by our current frameworks in discussions around youth sexting.

This debate is also constrained by the panics around the vulnerability of children and their sexuality. However, I believe now more than ever there is a crucial need for research into sexting behaviour and other youth trends.

Where do you think 'sexting' fits on the amateur porn spectrum?
